Hello, I’m Lance E. Casteel, founder of LEC Ahead LLC. I created LEC Ahead to help new and developing leaders build confidence, communicate expectations, and handle real workplace challenges with more structure and clarity.
My leadership experience began at 17, when I was trusted to supervise an overnight restaurant crew as the only manager on duty. Since then, I have worked across retail, hospitality and gaming, regulatory compliance, warehouse operations, human resources, property management, and business ownership.
During nearly 13 years with The Home Depot, I advanced through department supervision, human resources support, and assistant store management. I helped support daily operations, employee development, training, accountability, and leadership communication across multiple departments and teams.
Those experiences taught me that leadership principles may remain consistent, but people, workplaces, and challenges do not. Effective leaders have to understand their audience, adapt their approach, and recognize when someone needs instruction, encouragement, clearer expectations, or accountability.
At Harrah's Casino, I progressed from slot operations into training and compliance leadership. I helped create instructional materials, supported employee and train-the-trainer classes, and contributed to training efforts that helped employees better understand expectations, procedures, and performance standards.
Later, when a family business unexpectedly became my responsibility, I learned another side of leadership. I managed accounting, taxes, contractors, customer financing, property operations, transportation requirements, and regulatory compliance for a mobile-home sales and installation business.
That experience reinforced a lesson I now share with clients: leadership rarely happens under perfect conditions. Leaders must learn how to prioritize, make informed decisions, and move forward with the time, people, and resources available.
During nearly 13 years with The Home Depot, I advanced through department supervision, human resources support, and assistant store management. I helped oversee operations across 16 departments and supported a workforce of approximately 130 to 200 employees. My responsibilities included hiring, onboarding, scheduling, compliance, safety, employee relations, performance coaching, customer resolution, operational execution, and leadership development. I also coached supervisors and associates on communication, accountability, performance management, and adapting to organizational changes.
Developing people has always been the most rewarding part of my work. Over the years, I have coached employees who initially struggled with confidence, communication, or setting expectations and later advanced into leadership roles.
Helping people recognize their abilities, strengthen their skills, and achieve goals they once believed were out of reach remains one of the accomplishments I value most.
My coaching style is straightforward, practical, and honest. I do not believe in empty praise, generic motivational speeches, or telling people only what they want to hear. Encouragement matters, but it should be supported by effort, progress, and accountability.
When someone is struggling, I first work to understand why. There may be a personal challenge, unclear expectations, inadequate training, or a lack of confidence. If someone does not know how to perform a responsibility, they need teaching. If they know how but are not consistently doing it, they need coaching, clearer expectations, and accountability.
I have also learned that being correct is not enough. Leaders must understand how to deliver a message so that it can be heard, understood, and acted upon. Direct communication can create clarity, but effective leadership also requires timing, self-awareness, respect, and an understanding of the person receiving the message. That lesson has shaped the way I coach. My goal is to be honest enough to create meaningful improvement, supportive enough to build confidence, and practical enough to help clients apply what they learn in real workplace situations.
I created LEC Ahead because teaching and developing people is the work I find most meaningful. I want to help new and developing leaders avoid some of the unnecessary frustration, overwork, confusion, and mistakes that often come with stepping into leadership.
Clients should leave coaching with more than information. Real workplace situations rarely unfold as neatly as they do in a book or training course. Clients should understand how to adapt what they have learned to the people, pressures, and challenges they actually face, and leave with clear steps they can put into action.
You do not need to be perfect to become an effective leader. You need the willingness to learn, accept honest feedback, take responsibility, and keep improving.
